Reports of Pirate Radio’s Demise Greatly Exaggerated

So, there's been a bit of ballyhoo about the demise of Pirate Radio. Since at least 2007, according to Pat Murphy via the FRN:

"They are killing pirate radio. They have done more to kill pirate radio, than the entire federal government agencies combined. These individuals who want to appear to, know more than anyone else, are destroying something that should be fun for everyone. The listeners and pirate ops both.

Just my suggestion and view, having watched this happen, again and again. If it doesn't stop, they're going to kill it for everyone. I know some of you remember the way it was in the 80's. You could listen for a month and not hear one single pirate. I'd hate to see it go back to that, because we had driven away all the good operators."

Happily, the stats regarding Pirate Listening seem to indicate otherwise.

Chris Smolinski, over at HFUnderpants.com trended some stats that seem to indicate an actual growth in pirate listenership, or perhaps a just decline in intimidation of dxers.

Since other logging venues have opened up, without WBNY/Pat Murphy's access to their login data – both Ops and listeners can feel safer enjoying their listening hobby.

To think there isn't enough room to thrive in pirate radio listening is folly: The Free Radio Cafe has quite the robust logging area even since its recent debut on the scene:

The thing that's abundantly apparent here:

If you offer Ops and DXer's choice – and an environment free of intimidation – they will come.

Pirate Radio will wax and wane, but the stats show it always pulls through, given the immense resilience and creativity of its ops, and the enthusiasm and persistence of its listeners.

Long Live Pirate Radio!

Still old and busted: WBNY attacking DXers

Jerry Graves, aka Commander Unfunny, strikes again!

Faced with the failure-to-thrive of his "private, members only weblog" — we find the unfunny bunny obsessively targeting DX'ers and  posts on the much-maligned HFunderpants, a forum he swore to disavow — to prop up his frail, noisy, power-seeking narcissism.

What could be funnier than the stale gasps of a washed-up, profoundly embittered, AM talk-radio narcissist, flaming out in full-spectrum technicolor?

Wait! I know!

Perhaps a pirate show that DOESN'T ridicule and talk-down to its own audience? That would be a treat, but WBNY hasn't produced anything like that in years.

Such a shame, legend has it WBNY once upon a time produced great shows that DIDN'T rely on character assasination humor.

C'mon Jerry, you were —  once upon a time — known for your creativity and better production values.

It's been a while, but give it try! It couldn't lose more fans than you've lost now, could it?

Easter’s on it’s way, candies are on store shelves, and kids are excited for what the Easter Bunny will bring them. Why does WBNY Strive to be the meanest bunny on the airwaves?

You can’t explain that!

Commander Bunny, furless flop-ear of these here intar-webz, has done it again!

Don’t look now, but somebunny, for possibly the first time in WBNY history, is accepting constructive criticism, and accidentally left the comment form open!

Remember Kids: Don’t forget to WRAP THAT RASCAL and use a proxy before posting.

Tokyo’s rabbit cafes hopping with customers — The Japan Times

Hi Kids! Sorry for the lack of my armchair trolling activities, I’m finishing the last classes of my Information Security degree, and I had to put the lulz aside for a while.

Besides, Dea and Guise are so much better at it than I, I prefer my role to remain as a member of the Greek Chorus for these more pressing matters in Pirate Radio.

Oh yes, well also… I got that Lovely SDR-IQ and the learning curve is immense, and I’m having too much fun drawing Al Fansome’s ire with all my new-fangledness.

So I’ve been distracted, and it’s become apparent that some folks just aren’t getting their usual level of attention.

So, as  measure of goodwill, I post the following article courtesy of the Japan times, in honor of those special folks who DO enjoy spending spare time in the company of Rabbits. I hope a few lonely rabbits will consider this an opportunity to find  new community where they’d be better loved and appreciated!

Without fur-ther ado:

Tokyo’s rabbit cafes hopping with customers

Japan Times: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/nn20120216f2.html

Tokyo is full of cafes catering to a wide assortment of tastes, but in recent years a new breed of coffee house has emerged for people who love to hang out with rabbits.

Ra.a.g.f, pronounced “raf,” opened last fall in the fashionable Jiyugaoka area in Meguro Ward, and is usually packed at weekends with customers reveling in the company of the cafe’s 20 to 30 rabbits.

“I came here during my break to relax,” said a smiling woman in her late 20s as she fed fresh vegetables to some of the rabbits.

Customers who want to buy rabbits can purchase the animals from the cafe’s breeding center — but the cafe’s rabbit “staff” are not for sale.

Cafe manager Maria Fuwa cautioned that customers have to be able to provide suitable accommodations for the rabbits and also must promise never to abandon them.

In Fuwa’s view, a rabbit is for life.

Another rabbit cafe, Usagi Cafe Ohisama (Rabbit Sun Cafe), was launched last year by a pet shop operator in the Shimokitazawa area in Setagaya Ward.

This coffee shop is also buzzing on weekends and most of the customers are women, said cafe manager Asami Yoshimura

The cafe has about 30 of the animals, but the big rabbit on campus is Naito-kun — who lives with Yoshimura.

Yet another rabbit cafe operating in the same area is Usagi no Ehon (Rabbit Picture Books).

Given the many live music houses and small theaters nearby, it has turned into a gathering spot for musicians and actors.

“I want our cafe to be a healing space for stressed-out people,” said Etsuko Kawasaki, who has been running the cafe with her family for the past two years.

The cafe’s seven rabbits may not be a match for the hordes cavorting in its two rival establishments — but it does display picture books and sell rabbit-themed merchandise.
